JOHN Hunter Hospital volunteers have compiled their tried and tested recipes into a cookbook to raise money for the hospital.

Manager of volunteer services Vicki Dunn said The Old Chooks Cookbook has both old favourites and modern cuisine to suit all tastes and ability levels.

"The cookbook is full of wisdom for those who are new to cooking, with our volunteers providing handy hints and conversion guides to help even the most inexperienced cooks," Ms Dunn said.

Greater Newcastle acute hospital network general manager Todd McEwan said the hospital volunteers were extremely dedicated to raising money for the hospital.

"During the last financial year the volunteers donated a record $260,000 in equipment and comforts for the hospital and these effort look set to continue with the launch of the cookbook," Mr McEwan said.

He paid tribute to the volunteers work including booking accommodation for relatives, delivering newspapers to wards and running the gift shop.
